Have you ever wondered “what’s up with him” or more likely “what the hell is wrong with her?” after an encounter with your boss? Yeah, me too! In this series we will discuss signs that your boss is just not that into you. But, more importantly, we will discuss the potential why and what to do about it!
Although I have not dated in many years, I cannot help but see the similarities between dating someone who is “just not that into you” and having a boss who seems aloof. I recently started crushing on someone (code for the poor guy probably doesn't have a clue) and the experience thus far has inspired me to share...ways to know that your manager or supervisor is just not that into you and what you can do to change that!
Sign #1: My boss rarely responds to my calls, emails, text messages, IM’s, etc.!
Or ... it takes a while for him or her to respond. Communication is key in any relationship. Our crush may be able to get away with not communicating because they simply have no interest in us (ouch), but a leader who is bad at it can wreak havoc in the workplace.
When your manager fails to answer or respond to your calls and other communications in a timely manner, not only can it affect your productivity, but also your general well-being in the workplace. It could be that he or she is just a poor communicator or it could be that they are not truly vested in your growth and overall success in the workplace.
Gather your thoughts, including specific instances where the communication is lacking and, if you are comfortable, set up a time to meet with your boss to discuss how the two of you can work together to ensure communication is flowing both ways. If you are unable to come to an agreement, it may be time to consult with HR, upper management, or seek employment elsewhere.
